Remember when communication methods consisted of interactions over telephone lines or on paper? Now we have a multitude of ways to connect with each other and share information. Gone are the days of a singular mention in a print publication; a mention can now garner you coverage and social shares from the outlet itself or from its readers.
To illustrate the magnitude of mentions on social media, our data analysis team took a look at the number of times media outlets were mentioned on Twitter or Facebook, and which type of outlet received the most mentions. This counts any time a URL linking to an outlet was mentioned in a tweet or anytime a homepage was shared on a Facebook wall post.
The Top 10 Most Social Audiences:
TV & Radio: The broadcasting industry came in first place with 235K mentions on Twitter and 97K on Facebook. The marketer in us thinks this could be due to the high number of contests and promotions these outlets offer.
Celebrities: Outlets covering celebrities come in second, with 152K Twitter mentions and 11K on Facebook. Admit it, you couldn’t resist sending that tweet to Us Weekly or Life & Style about their exclusive on Leanne Rimes.
Business: Your faith in humanity can be restored because not only do we like fluffy gossip, we also care about professionalism and business. These outlets have 145K mentions on Twitter and 1K on Facebook.
Arts & Entertainment: Social media provides a great space to talk about the latest movie, play or art show, and plenty of people are taking advantage of this. These outlets were mentioned 91K times on Twitter and 9K on Facebook.
International News: We like to think we’re a worldly bunch and although the outlets we researched were based in the U.S., some covered international news. Of those, 98K had mentions on Twitter and 640 on Facebook.
Athletes: Sports is a common topic for many people and on social media, it’s no different. Readers mention their favorite sports outlets 54K times on Twitter and 14K on Facebook.
Comedy: To change it up a bit, comedy outlets had 53K shares on Facebook and 9K on Twitter – they’re the rare content creators that have scored more mentions on Facebook than Twitter!
Breaking News: Nowadays, news seems to break on social sites so it makes sense that this category would fall into the top 10. Breaking News outlets have 35K mentions on Twitter and 8K on Facebook.
Computer & Video Games: Readers have taken to Twitter 33K times to mention their favorite computer or video game outlet, and 3K on Facebook.
Armed Forces: Outlets dedicated to coverage of the Armed Forces fit into the rare mold that has more mentions on Facebook than Twitter. They have brought in 3K mentions on Twitter and 24K on Facebook.
We looked at 304 outlet topics – from Fashion to Labor Unions, Motorsports to Healthcare – and the above outlet topics were the 10 most mentioned on Twitter and Facebook. Are you surprised by the results? Let us know your thoughts!
