Vocus’ Top 50 Social Media Marketing Influencers on Twitter Released

Analyzing relevancy, reach, engagement and cone of influence, Vocus selects the top social media experts

Vocus, a leading global provider of cloud-based public relations (PR) software, today released its 2014 Top 50 Social Media Influencers on Twitter list.

The list was compiled with proprietary Vocus technology using an algorithm to reveal influence based on contextual analysis, engagement levels, reach and relevancy. Unlike other methodologies, Vocus’ technology populates its pool of candidates based on more than keyword searches alone.

The process begins by identifying a set of initial keywords, which the software then uses to crawl over 100,000 websites to better define the context, or topic, that will be calculated. Once the context is established, a pool of candidates is selected by screening tweets for people who originate meaningful and topical content, engage with others on the topic, and share content on the topic. A multi-variant analysis of the candidate list then selects the top influencers at the nexus of the topic, in this case social media marketing, based on content and relationships and ranks them according to a proprietary model.

Influencers on this list include best-selling authors, entrepreneurs, executives and more – all at the center of social media marketing.

“Influence must be judged in context and by topic,” said Vocus Vice President of Data Science Dan Gartung. “The democratic nature of our algorithm sets it apart from others. When we set out to create a list like this, we have no idea who will make the grade. Objective data reveals who the leaders are in the industry based on their relevance and influence, keeping biases, politics and opinions out of the process.”
