We’re two weeks into 2016 so I can’t say “Happy New Year,” but it’s not too late to make resolutions.
When asked about their careers, most people want to advance. But then they’re not quite sure where to start. Plus, life gets in the way.
In 2016, make yourself the focus. Do the things that will push your career forward. It’s not as hard as you think. If you’re working in PR, you already know what to do. You just haven’t thought of yourself in the same way as a brand. You should start.
Write a book
While a lot of us only speak in emoji, most people still read. A book can become a major differentiator and solidify your position as a thought leader.
It’s not as hard as you think to write a book or get it published. There are plenty of independent publishers willing to work with the right people.
Melissa G. Wilson, whose clients include the president of Holland Cruise Lines and the head of HR for the NBA, said, “Writing a book today is the best marketing strategy, not only for an individual but also for a company.”
And that’s interesting because you should think of yourself the same way as you think about your clients. The same ideas for promotion can and do apply. It all hinges on the network you can create.
This month, 10 writers, including myself, are forming a group that will work together to release books and make sure they are seen by the masses. There is strength in numbers. And there are a couple spots still available if you’re ready to write a great business book in 2016.
Get people to view your content
Who views your content is even more important than your content. Similar to the point above, there is strength in numbers. Even if you have a low or limited social media presence, you can get lots of traction. You have to start somewhere. Start by motivating the right people to share your content.
If you have 100 followers but your network has 100,000 followers, then your real following is 100,100. The quickest way to thought leadership is motivating people to spread the word.
Create timely content
Your network is still the most important thing. That said, you won’t go far without good content. Content is how you sustain engagement. It’s easy to create content. There are a million ways to create video now and connect directly with the audience you create. Take advantage of this.
Be unique
Look at what people similar to you are doing and do something different. Create a unique position for yourself. This is something you would suggest to your client. Take your own advice.
These are four things you can get accomplished in 2016. And by the end of the year, these will be the best resolutions you ever made.
