Five years ago, along with my co-founding blogger Jay Krall (who is now with DataSift), I started writing for this blog. (Happy 5th Birthday, Cision Blog!)

In thinking about how this blog has changed over the years – like how in my first post Social media brings together like minds IRL (in real life) I felt the need to define IRL, Tweeters and Tweet-ups in parentheses, or how Jay insisted that, like a real journalist, I not title-case my headlines (sorry, buddy, we gave up on that one!) –  I realized that despite small changes, our original mission has remained the same. From the onset, our main objective was “to help communicators navigate the evolving media landscape,” a statement that rings true today. That media landscape and the definition of communicators is radically different than it was five years ago, but the statement still holds water today.

This is not to say that Jay and I are awesome genius future-predictors. Rather, the fundamentals of journalism (creating great content), communications (building trust and relationships) and media (sharing a message that resonates with your community and audience), still ring true regardless of the tools and tactics that have changed so radically.

It can be difficult to define a mission, but what’s important is that you identify objectives that will resonate over time and design goals for the long haul.

Not to deny the Cision Blog community the typical ‘Then and Now’ roundup, I present to you this infographic of how times have changed since Cision Blog’s launch:
