A scribe named Dave Blum was in the news this week. Some folks thought he wrote a blog to dish the dirt on what goes on at the New York Times. (He says he does not.) It made me think of a piece I read by Blum some years back on The Club for One-Pulse Words, a group that speaks in words of just one beat. In the piece, he took care to use no words with more than one pulse, and I have done so with this brief blog post, as well.

As Blum wrote then, “words do not have to be long to be good.” That’s a thing for us to keep in mind as we learn to write for the Web in ways that help more folks grasp our thoughts with ease. It gives us cause to cast off the trite talk of the old pitch.

How can you write your firm’s news in ways that will give it more reach? One way to cull puffed up speech from your work: try to write in words of one pulse. Once you start, it may seem to help you fly free of old thoughts on how to write (hence the bird in this pic). You could give it a try down there in the space where folks leave their thoughts at the end of blog posts.

Have a great end of the week.
