Cheryl Carpenter will be the next Washington bureau chief for McClatchy Newspapers. She is currently the managing editor of The Charlotte Observer, and has served in this role since 2005. Carpenter first joined the Observer in 1983, and during her tenure, has served as assistant managing editor, page one editor, business editor and state editor. She will replace James Asher at McClatchy, who has been the Washington bureau chief since 2011, following several years as investigative editor. Asher is leaving to join journalism startup the Injustice Project. This news comes weeks after McClatchy announced it will close all of its foreign bureaus and refocus content on U.S. news and politics.
