Andrew Sullivan, an early adopter of the blogging medium and founder of The Dish, has announced that he will exit the blogosphere and shut down his ground-breaking site. Sullivan’s writing was largely shaped by current events; he began blogging in the late ’90s and followed the turbulent years after 9/11 during the George W. Bush administration. He is known for his initial support and later denouncement of the Iraq War, and was an early proponent of Barack Obama, as well as marriage equality. Sullivan’s blog traveled first to Time, then later to The Atlantic and The Daily Beast, before he struck out on his own and re-launched The Dish using a subscription-based model (one of the first blogs to do so). While his future plans are unknown, Sullivan stated in his farewell post that he plans to continue writing long-form essays and hopes to eventually author a book.
