Each week, inVocus researches an upcoming event for our Pitch an Event feature, which provides pitching tips to our PR readership. During a recent visit to the University of Maryland, Rebecca Bredholt, managing editor of magazine content at Vocus Media Research Group, found that our Pitch an Event feature has even provided future PR practitioners with an exercise in press releases.
University of Maryland Ph.D candidate Melissa Janoske asked students from the Public Relations Techniques class she teaches to choose an event from our Pitch an Event feature, and connect it to an organization in a news pitch. See what two prospective PR pros have come up with using the 48th anniversary of Julia Child’s “The French Chef” and American Heart Month, both of which were celebrated in February.

Celebrate Julia Child’s Broadcast Anniversary
at Williams Sonoma
Customers may partake in cooking and discounts in commemoration of the icon
North Bethesda, MD – On February 11, Williams-Sonoma will be transforming the back of their store into a mini kitchen where customers can watch or participate in “Julia Child-inspired” cooking lessons as a part of the store’s three hour celebration of Child’s cuisine and the culture she inspired. This Friday marks the 48th anniversary of Child’s first time on air in the popular cooking program, “The French Chef.”
Child was known for her laidback attitude, her exquisite recipes and for encouraging a fun cooking experience. With creative recipe books, family-oriented baking tools, and copper cookware (Child was known for using and decorating with copper pots), Williams-Sonoma supports everything Child stood for.
Those who participate will receive 20% off their entire purchase while customers who don’t participate but want to be a part of the Julia Child celebration will receive 20% of copper pots as a form of recognizing Child’s timeless cooking accessories.
Participants are not required to purchase any Williams-Sonoma goods but will be able to walk away with their “masterpiece” to bring home to the family should they take advantage of the one-day discount. All customers will receive free recipes from Julia Child’s most famous and simple do-it-at-home meals. The celebration will take place from 6-9 p.m. at your local Williams-Sonoma Friday, February 11, with new recipes and lessons starting every half hour.

Mrs. Bredholt,
The “Cheerios ‘Hearts’ Healthy Women” Parade is February 28 at D.C.’s U Street and 14th St., at 2 p. m. The parade is the Cheerio® way to start Women’s History Month and American Heart Month, celebrating strong women and strong hearts.
Sponsored by the American Heart Association, the parade features a bundle of guests, including the Howard University marching band, NBC4 News, WPGC radio, The University of Maryland’s Testudo, and many more. Round up the family for a day of face painting, trivia games, and best of all, heart-healthy snacks. But, the parade is just the beginning.
Cheerios® will feature daily facts at Cheerios.com about women who shaped America, as well as fun facts for moms on how to stay heart-healthy. The week ends March 6 with Cheerios®’ grand tribute to women who survived heart disease, where Chairman and CEO Kendall J. Powell will present $1million to heart disease research and prevention.
Since 1941, Cheerios® has been a part of America’s balanced breakfast and family living. In March, Cheerios® continues that legacy.
As the managing editor at Vocus, Inc., we want you to have exclusive coverage on our event.
