Last week at the Vocus Demand Success 2014 users’ conference, Randi Zuckerberg, editor-in-chief of Dot Complicated, a digital lifestyle website, and a former Facebook executive, noted some of her social media pet peeves before getting into the bulk of her discussion on trends in technology and social media.
#Blessed: Zuckerberg was referring to people who use this hashtag to emphasize how amazing their life is (with the implication that it is much more amazing than yours). “No one is actually feeling ‘blessed,’” she said. “They’re just bragging!”
The Obsessive Food Blogger: These are the people who post any kind of food, for what seems like every meal, regardless of whether anyone in their audience cares or might find the food appetizing. Zuckerberg noted that even Martha Stewart has tweeted “gnarly” food pictures — including a wedge salad with “vomit”-like dressing.
The Mommy Over-sharer: As a mother, Zuckerberg admitted to indulging in some maternal bragging herself. Still, she pointed out that this kind of sharing creates a digital footprint that children have no control over, and that, well, “maybe your child wants to get a job one day…”
The Romantic Couple: These people post long threads in which they do nothing but declare their love for one another. “Please,” Zuckerberg said. “Just take this offline.”
The Over-filtered Instagrammer: Every photo this person shares looks completely different from when it was taken because of the heavy filters used.
The Vague-blogger: This is the person who leaves vague statements on social media indicating malaise (usually compounded by ellipses). The vague-blogger remains equally enigmatic when someone expresses concern.
The Old Person Who Just Doesn’t Get It: This one’s pretty self-explanatory, but to drive the point home, Zuckerberg projected an example.![]()
