The Burlington Free Press has parted ways with several staffers amid restructuring in the newsroom that forced all employees to reapply for their jobs. Higher education reporter and 16 year veteran Tim Johnson has been laid off, as was community news and technology reporter Lynn Monty, who refused to interview for her own position. Additionally two statehouse reporters, Nancy Remsen and Terri Hallenbeck, have exited, though the exact circumstances surrounding their departures is unclear.

The Free Press is not the first Gannett paper to deploy this strategy; earlier this year both the Des Moines Register and Tennessean announced similar cuts.
