PR Strategy

LEWIS PR’s resident PR pro Adam Singer chatted with us on #prwebchat to tell us how to fuel our PR jetpacks. The power of PR is huge if you know how to deploy the right tactics. Luckily, Adam has some great ones to share.

1) In a world where every company is a media company, PR should lead. PR is shifting from reactive to proactive. Why is this important? Because this flips PR from tactical (push) to strategic (pull). Become the media. Stop renting other people’s channels; you’ll never build up traction without having your own megaphone.

2) Use social media in your PR efforts. Developing a strategy is the most important thing to consider–you can’t achieve a goal if you don’t have a plan. But why should we use social media in our PR efforts? Consider these stats of business buyers:

  • 91% read blogs, watch user generated video, participate in other social media
  • 55% of decision-makers are in social networks
  • 43% are creating media (blogs, uploading videos or articles, etc.)

  • 3) If you don’t blog, you can hand in your “PR pro card.” Blogs are social media, and PR pros need to be able to control website and blog content, not just outposts. Blogging also helps position you as a thought leader in your field. Here are 19 more reasons why you should blog and not just Tweet.

    4) Consistency is key in marketing. Here is a lot more on the consistency thing. Consistency is a really simple (but often missed) concept. Also you should not just be consistent and have it over and done with: archive, optimize and publish to be found long-term.

    5) Be a content creator. Creators write, curators collect and aggregate. Anyone can curate, not everyone can create. You can no longer count on media to tell your story because no one has a monopoly on attention anymore. But at the end of the day – all content you create and activities should lead back to a hub with marketing funnels. Why? Because you can go direct to the consumer with messages and build a community. To not do so is basically laziness.

    6) Building media relations doesn’t have to be tough. Regarding media relations: be relevant, timely and resourceful. Know the media you are pitching and don’t spam them. Consider different ways of pitching–for example, what if you tagged a journalist/ blogger in a post instead of emailing them? That’s a new and effective way to get their attention. Really savvy companies would actually spend a small percentage of their time on media relations and most of the time publishing content. The whole point of the web is to build a community–media relations can help, but still just treats the web like print.
