The Academy Awards is the crème de la crème of award shows. And we all know there are three best things about the Oscars:
- The dresses.
- Who won or more excitingly, who should have won.
- And, obviously, any excuse to talk about the Oscars.
And talk we did…so much so that we broke Twitter. So let’s talk about it some more. Here’s my 2014 Oscars recap!
This year’s Oscars felt a bit like an Oscar nominated film. I recognize that I’m watching talented people present me with thoughtful, well-crafted entertainment but all I can think is, “This is still on? Was last year this long?!” Interestingly, it’s statistically likely that the Oscars will run long and each year tends to be longer than the previous year although 2002 was officially the longest at four hours and twenty minutes.
This year, there were some expected wins. Gravity won for basically everything technical, and it makes sense. Alfonso Cuaron was magical, which also makes sense as he directed one of my favorite Harry Potter movies, The Prisoner of Azkaban.
There were also some not so expected losses…#PoorLeo.
By the way, Ellen DeGeneres was wonderful. She was adorable and quirky and made me smile with warm fuzzies all night long. She was so lovely it’s hard to choose which Ellen moment was my favorite Ellen.
#scarfEllen: Because she added a scarf without apparent reason, and it was fantastic.
#pizzaEllen: Because the Oscars are absolutely better with pizza.
#selfieEllen: Because it was so popular it broke Twitter.
As an aside: How ridiculous is it that everyone is so good looking in this selfie? In every other group selfie I’ve seen there’s always someone making a weird and distracting face that significantly takes away from the overall shot. I know Kevin Spacey is trying, but it’s still nowhere near as bad as basically every group shot I see in my Facebook feed. Also, this version is making the rounds.
Some might disagree with me, but I think the most important Ellen of the night was #Glindadressellen, because it’s magic.
But Ellen wasn’t the only Covergirl in a pretty dress. What about all of the other pretty dresses? Well, when people were discussing fashion they were talking about this:
Why? Because we are madly in love with Lupita Nyong’O’s dress. In fact it was talked about more positively than any other dress. Plus it looks a little like Cinderella’s ball gown!
And because before the Oscars had even officially started Jennifer Lawrence already fell after tripping over a cone. I tripped on my carpet this morning so J-Law just may be my spirit animal.
While Jennifer made a big impact on the red carpet (literally), here’s how the other stars fared:
The most talked about ladies were all nominees or award recipients this year, save Charlize Theron. Girl knows how to work a red carpet.
And because the Oscars is an excuse to see fancy dresses by fancy designers, here’s how the designers compared:
Sadly, Versace dressed more stars than any other designer this year but came up fourth in the conversation ranks. Maybe next time Versace will win the fashion race and Leo can get that elusive Oscar statue. But what about the awards themselves? Did the right person win? Did anyone give a speech as epic as Jacqueline Bisset? Were there any surprises? #AdeleDazeem
I compared conversation around each nominated film based on if people felt the director, actors or overall movie deserved to win.
Overall, people felt the Oscars got it right. People expressed that Steve McQueen deserved best director slightly more than Alfonso Cuaron and while viewers were fans of the Dallas Buyer’s Club performances they felt the Gravity performances were stronger than awarded. However, all performances paled in comparison to the discussion around Lupita Nyong’O’s well deserved win.
In conclusion, the fashion was fabulous, the right people won and we’ve had enough water cooler chat to make more than halfway through the week. And as a last take away, what was the most buzzworthy of all the buzzworthy things that happened this Oscars?
Miss Lupita is crowned once again. Good talk.
