Users constantly adopt new behaviors, preferences and technologies. Social networks play catch up, adding new features and making changes to the user experience.
This creates new opportunities and challenges for PR and marketing pros. Because the updates roll out so quickly (and sometimes without much fanfare), it’s easy to miss the latest changes.
Here’s a roundup of this week’s social media news and updates that may impact how you conduct social PR or marketing:
World Cup Breaks Facebook Record – As the World Cup came to a close on Sunday, the winning goal by German player Mario Götze not only secured the championship, the game also became the most talked about event on Facebook, ever. A whopping 88 million people generated over 280 million interactions via Facebook posts, comments and likes as they broadcasted play-by-plays and commentary during Sunday’s epic game.
These numbers have social media marketers thinking, “What Facebook flight?”
Twitter Makes Data Even Sexier – Data lovers everywhere just got a little happier this week. Twitter unveiled its newest analytics dashboard, which goes beyond retweets, favorites and replies. Although users can still see those metrics, for the first time, Twitter users can see how many times people viewed their tweets on an iPhone app or Twitter.com. You can also see hour-by-hour stats on a tweet and how many followers a particular tweet received.

Google+
Pick a name, any name – After three years, Google+ changed its community rules, now allowing people to create profiles with fake names or aliases. Whether you want to be your dog or an alter ego, the world of Google+ is now your oyster. Will this lead to brands experiencing more trolling since people don’t have to be tied to their true identities?

Get your network’s news, instantly – Earlier this week, LinkedIn acquired the news alert startup Newsle. Newsle’s claim to fame is allowing users to get email alerts whenever people in their networks are mentioned in the news. When this new feature rolls out on LinkedIn, it will be that much easier to keep up with your network.
Happy birthday Instagram – The social network turned 4-years-old this week. What was the first picture posted? A dog…what else?
