October 1-31
What: A book can be a perfect companion, but sharing books with others can lead to illuminating discussions. A reading group is the ideal place for book lovers to find new books and make new friends. During October, support literature and help bookworms connect during National Reading Group Month.
Background: The Women’s National Book Association started National Reading Group Month in 2007 to celebrate the nonprofit association’s 90th anniversary. The month encourages all book lovers to increase literary engagement through a reading group. Each year, the association sponsors literary events for reading groups and shares ways for readers to start or join a group.
Story Pitch: Authors have a perfect opportunity this month to promote their new books by leading a reading group discussing their own book, or one that has shaped their writing. Libraries can host new reading groups and show members how to run their own book club. Publishers and bookstores can promote books that work well for group discussion and provide resources and discussion points for popular books.
Story Hook: According to the National Center for Education Statistics, children who read for fun have higher reading scores. A children’s reading group is a great way for kids to discover a love of books while developing vital reading and social skills. How can kids start their own book club? How can parents or teachers help children find age-appropriate and thought-provoking books for discussion? Keep the following questions in mind when making your pitch:
- How can new reading groups find members? How should book lovers find a group?
- Do ebooks have advantages for reading groups?
- Reading groups often go through many popular new books a year. Where can groups donate books once their discussion is over?
- Can a nonfiction reading group help professionals stay informed and competitive in the marketplace?
Tips: Provide contact information for someone who regularly organizes local literary events to talk about book ideas and activities for reading groups.
