Q: How do you use social media at your publication? Which platforms do you like best?

“At The Augusta Chronicle, we do use social media, even though we probably should use it more. We have Facebook pages for the newspaper as well as the sports section, several community sections, Daily Deals, and probably some I’m forgetting. We also have a Twitter feed for the paper @AUG_Chronicle, and several reporters, including me (yes, I am a reporter at times, even though my title is editor). Several reporters have taken to live-tweeting events, such as games, meetings and breaking news. We used to have a social media editor, but that position was eliminated after the person left for another job. But our Webmaster and several high-ranking editors encourage more use of social media to draw readers to the website and to engage with them.

I personally like both Twitter and Facebook for different reasons. They both are useful for getting out breaking news, though Twitter, to me, has a more immediate feel. We try not to bombard our Facebook pages with updates, reserving that more for Twitter. But if it’s big news, it will get on Facebook, as will stories that are a little quirky or otherwise might draw reader interest.”
