NPR‘s longtime sports commentator, Frank Deford, has bowed out from Morning Edition and announced his retirement after 37 years behind the microphone. Deford was NPR’s longest-running sports commentator and has offered sports commentary on the radio since 1980. He first gained popularity as a writer at Sports Illustrated beginning in the 1960s, and continued contributing to the magazine throughout his career. In the early 1990s, he was also the editor in chief of the now-defunct sports newspaper The National. Follow NPR’s Morning Edition on Twitter.
