The preparations, the red carpet, the nominations, the actors, actresses, and after parties could only mean one thing—(Ah!) The Golden Globes. Who took the crown for Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Picture, and Best Director? How raunchy was host, Ricky Gervais? Who was best-dressed? Worst-dressed? What were the biggest moments from the star-studded evening?

I happened to miss this year’s live TV broadcast, but caught some celebrity gossip and entertainment news afterwards. There are 15 awards given in the category of “Motion Picture” and 11 awards in the category of “Television”. So I turned to Visible Intelligence® to see what the buzz was on Twitter the day leading up to, day of, and day after the big event. Here are some highlights:

In the Best Actress Category

Meryl Streep not only won for “Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama”, but she won share of voice against the nominees in her category beating out 2nd place Rooney Mara by a huge margin.

In the Best Actor Category

A much different outcome in the “Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama” as winner George Clooney managed to get 3rd place in the share of voice category, with all the Twitter buzz going to Ryan Gosling. Ironically, Mr. Gosling was absent from Sunday night’s Globe, and George Clooney joked that he wishes he was there, but had he been present, might be too good-looking to handle.

The Verdict on Ricky Gervais

And how did people feel about Ricky Gervais’ third year hosting the Golden Globes? I’ve personally enjoyed the last couple of years with Ricky Gervais as host even with all the controversy surrounding him. There was obviously a huge volume of mentions of Ricky Gervais as host, but what exactly was the sentiment of people’s tweets? After filtering out all neutral tweets, I was surprised after discovering more positive sentiment over negative. Interestingly enough, the majority of negative tweets were upset that he seemed to have been restrained and tame, despite all the talk leading up to the event.

With the number of “Golden Globe” and “Ricky Gervais” mentions neck-and-neck at just over 600,000, I took a closer look at Topic Discovery to see the differences in the conversation. It’s interesting that football AND Ricky were highly talked about—two football playoff games coupled with a night of Ricky Gervais and the Golden Globes apparently made for an amazing night of television.

And the Winner Is? …

Having not yet seen “The Descendants”, I had no opinion on whether or not it should’ve won “Best Motion Picture-Drama”, but it did, and ranked high in prominent terms. Other notable mentions included Bradley Cooper’s facial hair, Reese Witherspoon for “Best Dressed” and Sarah Michelle Gellar for “Worst Dressed”.

So, did this year’s Golden Globes meet your expectations? Did your favorites win? Are you sad that Ricky Gervais will likely not host again next year? Tell us in the comments.
