Once-hot “citizen journalism” site Examiner.com recently closed up shop, citing sea changes in the way online advertising operates today as compared to when the site launched in 2008. The news, entertainment and lifestyle network allowed its contributors – or Examiners – submit pieces, for which they were paid based on the number of views. The site, invested in by Denver billionaire Phil Anschutz, was folded into AXS, which he also invests in.
