Cision Blog regrets to inform its readers that beloved New York Times fashion photographer Bill Cunningham has passed away. He fell ill last week following a stroke, and passed away soon after. Designated a living landmark in 2009, Cunningham practically invented the art of street style photography in New York, and chronicled changing fashion trends over the course of his near 40-year career with the Times. After several years working as a hatmaker, Cunningham got his start freelancing for Women’s Wear Daily, and struck out on his own, teaching himself photography and following the multiple muses whose sense of style caught his eye. Cunningham was an institution in fashion, in journalism, in New York and at The New York Times, and will be sorely missed by all those who loved him and his work.
