Tampa is no longer a two-newspaper town with the purchase and subsequent shutdown of the Tampa Tribune. Rival daily the Tampa Bay Times, owned by the non-profit Poynter Institute, acquired the paper this week and soon announced its doors would close. Tribune subscribers were receiving the Tampa Bay Times by Wednesday, with traffic from the Tribune’s website, TBO.com, redirected to the Times. TBO.com will be maintained and eventually, redesigned. Nearly 100 layoffs were expected as a result of the acquisition. The Tampa Tribune was founded in 1895.
