Charles Desmarais will be the San Francisco Chronicle‘s new art critic starting Nov. 2, replacing Kenneth Baker.
Honored to have a healthy number of "followers" @SFAIprez; hope all will "migrate" with me to @Artguy1 as art critic for @SFChronicle
— Charles Desmarais (@SFAIprez) September 16, 2015
Desmarais has been the president of the San Francisco Art Institute since 2011, but will step down from that role to take the position at the Chronicle. He was previously deputy director of art for the Brooklyn Museum from 2005 to 2011 and served as director of the Contemporary Arts Center from 1995 to 2006. Desmarais was executive director of the Robert Gumbiner Foundation for the Arts from 1994 to 1995, director of the Laguna Arts Museum from 1988 to 1994, and director of the California Museum of Photography from 1982 to 1988.
