The New York Times chief foreign correspondent and former London bureau chief John F. Burns has announced his retirement, though he will continue contributing to the international and sports desks. Burns has been with the Times for 40 years, 39 of them at the international desk. He was appointed to his most recent role in 2007, and had previously been the Baghdad and New Delhi bureau chief.
