Reports of specific journalists accepting voluntary buyouts from The New York Times have surfaced. Dec. 2 was the deadline to apply for a buyout, following an Oct. 1 announcement that 100 newsroom positions needed to be eliminated to avoid layoffs. As reported by Capital, confirmed buyouts thus far (among them many NYT veterans) include: Science Times editor David Corcoran; chief financial correspondent Floyd Norris; Washington editor and correspondent Brian Knowlton; senior correspondent Joseph Berger; Editorial Board member David Firestone; TV writer Bill Carter; Washington reporter Edward Wyatt; deputy national and education editor Ethan Bronner; publishing industry writer Christine Haughney; Arts staff editor David DeWitt; assistant business editor Jack Lynch; auto editor James Cobb; environment reporter Felicity Barringer; labor reporter Steven Greenhouse and advertising reporter Stuart Elliott.
