San Francisco Media Co. has announced that the San Francisco Bay Guardian has shut down, publishing its final print issue today, Oct. 15. Founded in 1966, the alt weekly has long been a watchdog for the Bay Area, fostering progressive and leftist discussion around issues facing San Franciscans, operating under the motto, “print the news and raise hell.” SF Media Co., owners of the San Francisco Examiner and SF Weekly, purchased the Guardian in 2012. Laid off staffers have vowed to search for a new buyer and resurrect the Guardian in some form. They can still be followed on the SFBG’s Twitter account, which will remain active under previous publisher Marke Bieschke.
