60-70 employees were laid off from USA Today earlier this week, including many long-time staffers. The cuts came in an effort to cut costs ahead of the papers planned split from parent company Gannett’s TV and digital division. According to USA Today, this split will affect the other 81 newspapers that Gannett owns, and notes that several restructuring moves could potentially change the face of operations at all of the papers involved.
Among the staff that have found themselves cut from USA Today are longtime Book Critic Bob Minzesheimer, longtime health & science editor Dennis Kelly, Pop Candy columnist Whitney Matheson, entertainment reporter Scott Bowles, transportation, aviation and business travel editor Glenn O’Neal, relationships expert Sharon Jayson, longtime pop music critic Edna Gunderson, sports desk assistant managing editor Deborah Barrington, and managing editor Jim Henderson.
