Mark Katches has been named editor and vice president for The Oregonian. He replaces Peter Bhatia, who is leaving to teach journalism at the Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Katches joins the paper from the role of editorial director for the Center for Investigative Reporting, where he will be replaced by Bob Salladay. Katches had previously been a deputy managing editor and assistant managing editor for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Prior to that, he was the investigative team leader for the The Orange County Register in Santa Ana, California.
