Many volunteers will tell you that the act itself is its own reward, and the most noble are often disinclined toward recognition. Clara Barton, founder of American Red Cross, is one such personality. On May 21, her achievements are recognized as American Red Cross Founder’s Day. The organization was founded in 1881 by Barton and a circle of like-minded friends. An early female educator in a profession then dominated by men, Barton also is noted for supporting solders during the Civil War. She founded the Red Cross by age 60 and oversaw the organization’s first two decades, paving the way for a long future of volunteerism and disaster relief.
