It’s here! Cinco de Mayo, one of the world’s longest parties has officially hit year 152 today. Besides that though, Cinco de Mayo is also a time to celebrate Mexican ancestry and culture. In case you wanted to read more about the history, here’s an article that explains the significance of this day.
So how is everyone celebrating? Well, if I had to guess: with salsas, piñatas and, no doubt, margaritas. One thing is certain- you can join the fiesta even if you’re not from Mexico! Actually, within this past week it looks like there were more Cinco de Mayo related posts in the U.S. than any other location in the world. That’s surprising, since I thought Mexico would have had the most.
Taking a closer look, the majority of content came from Blog and News/MSM sources. It also seems like trending topics revolved around food, drinks and festivities.
Here’s a fun fact for you: Cinco de Mayo is sometimes referred to as the “Mexican St. Patrick’s Day.” Why? I have no idea. Maybe because everyone joins in on the fun whether they’re Mexican, Irish, or of any other ethnicity. Or maybe it’s because of the amount of drinking that goes on.
Either way, people across the country are celebrating the Mexican way of life with some cities hosting some pretty awesome festivities. You can check out this article by USA Today for a list of the top ten places to celebrate the holiday.
So, if you celebrate Cinco de Mayo, hopefully you got to enjoy the festivities this past weekend and learned something new about Mexican culture wherever you are. These people in Los Angeles certainly did. ¡Feliz Cinco de Mayo!
