What: The recent contamination in West Virginia put safe drinking water in the spotlight. Although clean water is often taken for granted in the U.S., people around the world regularly struggle to get clean water, while also needing it to produce energy. Recognize local and international water concerns this March 22 on U.N. World Water Day.
Background: Established in 1993, this year’s World Water Day summit will be held in Tokyo and will focus on both clean water needs and energy derived from water sources. The goal is to also examine policy formulation and engage in discussion concerning the link between water and energy.
Story Pitch: Industries and groups that engage with water in any capacity have a good chance to highlight their work and how it can tie into global issues. Companies and facilities that work in water treatment have a clear connection to this day, and so should focus on not just new methods and products, but also how their work and facilities engage with local communities to meet their needs. Scientists, engineers and the universities that train them can focus on the future of water treatment and accessibility, as well as water-derived power. Groups who work to provide safe drinking water to people around the world will also want to take this day to discuss their global efforts and how they match up with the U.N.’s initiatives. All of these groups can also draw connections between their works to show how they’re improving the world’s water supplies. Now is the best time to highlight these previously unseen connections.
Story Hook: Hydro power accounts for 16 percent of total electricity generation. That’s more than nuclear, but what can be done to increase the amount of energy produced by this renewable source? Keep the following in mind when making your pitch:
- How does hydro power affect the environment?
- What are methods for simultaneously sanitizing water and using it to produce power?
- What are the major obstacles facing water sanitation around the world?
- What can people do daily to help improve their local and global water quality?
Tips: Provide contact information for a water sanitation engineer or group who works to help developing nations build water infrastructure.
