It’s no surprise that the site popular with foodies, crafters, and brides has just recently announced that it’s delving into the world of advertising with promoted pins.

Similar to Facebook and Twitter, promoted pins will give individuals and businesses the opportunity to hightlight a pin and have it show up on top of search results and category feeds. At this point, Pinterest has promised that promoted pins will be tasteful, transparent, and relevant and there won’t be any flashy banners and ads that will interfere with the user experience. Also, users on the site will know when a pin is being promoted with some sort of signage.

Before officially launching, Pinterest will test this new feature with free promoted pins to test consumer feedback. Pinners can expect to see a Halloween ad placement in the form of Darth Vader if they are searching for and looking up costume ideas. Pretty timely, eh? Considering how popular the platform is, it’s really no surprise that Pinterest is capitalizing on the fame and moving towards aggressive ad strategies so what does that mean for you and your business? How do you leverage this opportunity?

Promote your holiday products: Believe it or not, the holidays are just around the corner and I’m sure you’re already thinking about it. A great way to drive sales is to create boards that showcase the perfect gifts for each member in the family – Dad, Mom, Brother, Sister, Friend, etc. Or create broader categories based on what they might like – the perfect gift for the tech savvy boyfriend. Write detailed descriptions about the product and why it would make a great gift. As the holidays get closer, rearrange your boards so that they are closer to the top.

Group products around a theme: Think of all the products you sell and all the themes that fit them. The boards could be themed around colors, designs, materials, ingredients, locations or anything else that’s interesting and can be categorized. As mentioned above, make sure they have good searchable descriptions so that they’re found in search results.

Create a board of your best selling and popular products: Don’t be afraid to brag a little and create a board of favorite products, those that might have won an award, or are popular. Remind your consumers why they’re popular and selling well or possibly capture a new buyer who isn’t aware or thinking of buying something new.

Create boards based on seasons and events: Got a local event? Got a product that would be great for the upcoming season? Create a board for it. Create a board for any product that fits anything that might be going on. People search for the most random things on Pinterest and you never know when you might pop up in search results and it doesn’t hurt to be creative in this space. Worst case scenario you could always delete it or add the pin to another board.
