Q: How do you use social media at your job? Which platforms do you like best? Why?

“My paper has Twitter (@DBJnews) and Facebook accounts and each reporter maintains a company Twitter account. Since we are a weekly publication, those accounts better enable us to break news daily and keep our readers informed.

As a reporter, I use social media as another means to connect with the community. I think engaging with the community is an important role of a journalist and one that often can be overlooked. I want to be accessible as a writer and also be attuned to the interests and responses of our readers. I disperse information from our site, share information and stories from other publications and connect with potential and existing readers via Twitter and LinkedIn and gather news from Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn. I believe social media offers an opportunity for reporters to establish a deeper relationship with readers and to be seen as a trusted source of news.”
