The recent announcement of Gowalla’s acquisition by Facebook had me scratching my head a bit… But I’m sure it’s partially caused by the data I have on all the mentions of location services. In spite of their immense size as a platform, Facebook swallowing up Gowalla seems like a guppy eating a minnow when it comes to location services. Taking a look at mentions (posts, retweets, hashtags, comments, etc.) on the real time web (including Twitter, Facebook, videos and blogs), with location lovers the clear winners are Foursquare and Loopt, leaving SCVNGR, Gowalla and Facebook Places to fight over the crumbs.

Facebook’s stance is that they bought the team, not the service (which will be shut down in January) so I’m sure Zuck has something up his sleeve. Your move, Google Places…
