It’s that time of year again.   Time for costumes of all types–scary, adorable, celebrity wanna-be, funny, off-color and those few oddball ideas that make us groan or leave us scratching our heads.  Here at Visible we are going to have a grand old time with a cubicle decorating contests, a potluck and of course folks wearing costumes into the office. This year I’ll be dressed as a pirate and my little 8 month old (proudly and gratuitously displayed in this blog photo) will be my parrot side-kick. Couldn’t resist bringing in such a perfect costume prop!

I was curious to see if we were the only office celebrating this holiday so I turned to our trusty social media monitoring platform, Visible Intelligence, to see what people are buzzing about right now when it comes to wearing costumes to work.  Here are some highlights of what I found:

  • Women tended to discuss wearing costumes to work as well and what their childrens’ costumes will be on mommy sites
  • “Fun” and “party” were the most commonly used terms while there was concern about people wearing costumes deemed “too sexy” for the office
  • A few blogs were discussing the most controversial costumes of 2011 including:  zombie Osama bin Laden, Charlie Sheen, an “Anna Rexia” costume, and an assortment of dead celebrities and political costumes.
  • A fun infographic from HalloweenCostumes.com for the UltimateVisual Guide to Halloween Statistics

Conversations online will get more interesting as Halloween draws closer.  Is your office embracing the Halloween spirit?  Will you be wearing a costume to work this year?  Tell us!!
